This House of Lords Library briefing considers recent developments in Poland following the election of the Law and Justice party in the October 2015 Parliamentary elections.Jump to full report >>
Since taking office in mid-November 2016, the Law and Justice (PiS) Government has attracted significant domestic and international criticism after coming into conflict with Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal. The PiS Government also recently passed a media law that granted it powers to sack the heads of Poland’s public broadcasters. These developments have led some commentators to suggest that the rule of law is under threat in Poland and the European Commission has launched an investigation under its ‘Rule of Law Framework’. In addition, this In Focus also considers the UK’s relationship with Poland.
