This Library Note contains a brief history of the Library from its foundation in 1826 to the present day, tracing the key developments in the growth of the Library’s collections, services and staff. A large part of it is based on earlier histories of the Library written by Christopher Dobson and David L Jones, while the section on the 1834 fire has benefited from invaluable recent research carried out by Caroline Shenton for her book The Day Parliament Burned Down. The appendices contain a list of the Librarians of the House since 1826, and some photographs and drawings of the Library through the years.
