Local Elections: 2011

This paper summarises the results of the local and mayoral elections held on 5 May 2011. Elections were held in 279 local councils in England, and 26 in Northern Ireland. In England, Labour gained control of 28 authorities and lost control of one. The Conservatives lost control of 15 authorities but gained 18. The Liberal Democrats lost control of nine authorities and gained none.

There were also five mayoral elections in Bedford, Leicester, Mansfield, Middlesbrough and Torbay. Tony Egginton and Ray Mallon were re-elected in Mansfield and Middlesbrough respectively. They were first elected in 2002
