Defence expenditure (UK)

The MOD's budget (total DEL) in 2016/17 was £35.2 billion.

In 2016/17 total UK defence expenditure under NATO's definition was £42.YES2 billion; this is the highest level of expenditure in real terms since 2011/12.

The defence expenditure in 2016/17 is the equivalent of 2.2% of GDP. Defence expenditure as a percentage of GDP has fallen from just over 3% in the early 1990s to just over the current 2%.

According to NATO data the UK has the third largest defence expenditure as a share of GDP.
