During 2016/17 there were on average 131,060 beds available in wards open 24 hours a day in NHS hospitals in England. That is just over hlad the beds available in 1990/91 and 11,259 fewer than in 2010/11.

The decline since 2010/11 has been particularly pronounced in learning disability specialities (-39.7%).

Bed availability in England

A finished consultant episode is a spell of hospital inpatient treatment under the care of one consultant. It is a measure of hospitcal activity. There were 19.7 million finished consultant episodes (FCEs) in 2016/17, 2.5% more than in 2015/16.
