The NHS Hospital and Community Health Services in England employed 1 million full time equivalent staff in July 2017: representing a 1.8% increase since 2016 (18,930 more FTE staff), and a 3.8% increase since 2010 (37,875 more FTE staff).
The largest percentage change since 2010 was observed in FTE consultants, while ambulance staff showed the largest percentage change over the past year.
The majority of NHS staff in England are British, but a substantial minority are not. As of June 2017, 137,565 staff report a non-British nationality. This is 12.2% of all staff of whom a nationality is known. Between them, these staff report around 200 non-British nationalities.
