In 2016 around 589,000 people migrated to the UK and 340,000 migrated from the UK. Net migration to the UK in 2016 was +249,000, which was lower than 2015 by around 34%.

Estimates of net migration in the period 2001 to 2011 have been revised to reflect the results of the 2011 Census. The ONS is not able to separately revise estimates of immigration and emigration in the same way. The revised estimates are shown alongside the original estimates in the table.

In 2016, 250,000 citizens of EU28 countries migrated to the UK, 42% of the total number of migrants. In the same year, 117,000 citizens of EU28 countries migrated from the UK. Emigration from the UK totalled 340,000, of which 134,000 were British citizens.
