Asylum Seekers: Social Indicators page providing summary statistics on the number and origin of asylum seekers migrating to the UK.

In 2016, there were 30,747 applications for asylum excluding dependants, 6% fewer than in 2015. 87% of applicants were in-country and 13% were at port.

The highest number of asylum applications recorded in a single year was 84,132 in 2002.

At the end of 2016 there were 24,903 asylum applications still under consideration, compared with 24,609 the year before.

The top applicant nationalities in 2016 were Iran (12%), Pakistan (10%), Iraq (10%), Afghanistan (8%), and Bangladesh (6%). 

 

Among EU states, the UK had the seventeenth highest number of asylum applications per 1,000 inhabitants.
