There was little change in overall annual road accident casualty numbers for much of the 1980s and 1990s. The recrdoed number fell sharply from 2000 to 2013, since when the trend has been flat.

Road traffic accidents

THere were 1,792 deaths on Great Britain's roads in 2016. This is a decrease of 3.6% on 2015.

The number of children killed or seriously injured on foot has fallen in recent years.

THe number of child cyclists killed or seriously injured increased by 14% to 217 between 2015 and 2016. The number of adult cyclists killed or seriously injured increased by 3.2% to 3,047 in the same period.
