This Note offers a short history of the office of Deputy Prime Minister since 1940, when Clement Attlee served as deputy to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, without a formal use of the title. The leader of the Liberal Democrat Party, Nick Clegg, served as Deputy Prime Minister in the 2010-15 Coalition Government.
