This Note offers a short history of the office of Deputy Prime Minister since 1940, when Clement Attlee served as deputy to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, without a formal use of the title. The leader of the Liberal Democrat Party, Nick Clegg, currently serves as Deputy Prime Minister within the first peacetime coalition since the 1930s.
